How ducklings stay cool!

It is the first day of summer and we're having a humid heatwave. The car thermometer...

...read 36C/97F this afternoon, and the humidex right now means it feels like 43C/109F. I worry about the ducks and chickens and bees when it's this hot. I put the sprinkler on near the beehives so they can gather some water and fly through the droplets if they want. The ducks and chickens have fans, water, shade and...

...watermelon!

They were very pleased. And yes, the ducklings are getting HUGE, especially that boy back near mama with the brown cap and "dash" on his head.

Stay cool out there!

  2. They seem eager to get some of that watermelon :)
I have a name for that cute boy: Charlie (after Charlie Chaplin) :)

  3. Ducklings grow very, very fast. Critters seem to have innate systems for keeping cool. I watch the crows and ravens and they survive.

  4. Anyone who is kind to the bees and the ducks is a superior person in my mind.
    But, now I'm craving watermelon!

  5. They do grow quickly. I am melting just thinking about that heat. We have cold, wet rain falling - the English summer has arrived! The temperature is all of 12 degrees.

  6. I love the idea of a sprinkler for the bees!
We may not be having such Summer weather here, but if we had temperatures like that I'd be melting like Elaine.

  8. Watermelon in the shade works for me, too.

  9. You think of everything. I may request to be abandoned by your place one dark night in a few years time, leaving you no choice but to take me in. A snug nest of hay in the shed would be fine in summer, and a big dog basket by the fire in winter.
